Systematic Torture and Rape in Assad Regime Prisons

05-03-2015: ‘A former female detainee of a brutal security branch in Syria has told Zaman al-Wasl of her experience of torture and the systematic rape of activists inside the prison.

Photos below shown is not Om Ahmed. The Assad regime security forces cut off a woman’s hair for fun to humiliate and degrade her. Unfortunately, these kind of atrocities happen everyday in Syria.

Om Ahmed’s husband was killed in the battles of Southern Damascus, where she stayed to support the fighters who looked after her and treated her as a sister.

On her way home from a visit to her brother in Kiswa, she was arrested by regime security forces and moved to al-Khatib Detention Center, a facility of the Interior Security Department.

Imprisoned for three months, Om Ahmed underwent haunting traumas. “They regularly burned women’s bodies with hot poles while hanging them from their hands for hours,” Om Ahmed said.

The former detainee was subjected to torture, as security members wanted information about the rebels’ details and locations. “They used to drop cold water on my head and body, then hit me. I was hanged from my hands many times on the “Ghost”, where they tried to humiliate me. However the torture I received was not comparable to what other women faced”.

“An officer broke my finger by closing the door on it. All I can remember is that they called him Ali, but I cannot remember his face – as we were not allowed to look at officers’ faces”, she painfully detailed. Om Ahmed mentioned that security members tended to rape virgins, while other girls were often raped by groups of men.

Om Ahmed reported that a 19-year-old girl from Southern Damascus suffered from heavy bleeding because of the frequent rape she was subjected to. “Doctors visited the prison in cases of bleeding after rape. I met doctors, one was a good man as he transferred girls to hospitals, while another was tough and cruel, swearing at girls and women”, Om Ahmed recalled.

The former prisoner reported that one woman fell pregnant inside the prison, only to be taken away following the discovery. Her fate is still unknown. Om Ahmed confirmed that girls as young as 10 were in the prison, also subjected to similar torture. The woman claimed that security members used to cooperate with shabeeha, providing them imprisoned girls for money.

Om Ahmed was later transferred to Sasaa’s prison where she stayed for 20 days, tortured and humiliated. “Security members described us as ‘traitors’, where their military boots had more honor than us,” she said.’

European Parliament: don’t hide Syria’s war crimes

To: Mr Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament

It is shameful that your committee has banned the official display of Syrian torture pictures because they are “disturbing and offensive”. It is the torture itself that is disturbing and offensive. These pictures were shown at the United Nations in New York, the U.S. Congress and the National Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. They should be shown at the European Parliament so that politicians making decisions about Syria know the truth. There are many ways to warn the public about the graphic nature of these images – that is no reason for censorship. Please overturn this decision immediately to demonstrate support for the victims of human rights violations.

DECISION-MAKERS:

The five people on the committee refusing the exhibition are:

European parliament accused of ‘hiding away’ proof of torture by Assad regime

The European parliament has ruled against holding a major public exhibition of photographs documenting torture and abuse in Syrian government institutions, deeming the images too provocative, “disturbing and offensive”, the Guardian has learned.

The MEPs have decided that the photographs, smuggled out of Syria at great risk by a defector from the Assad regime codenamed Caesar, may only be shown at an undetermined future date in a small conference room on the parliament’s grounds. However, few people are likely to see it there and will not be endorsed by the organisation, even though the exhibition and its horrifying images were officially hosted by the United Nations.

A diplomatic source familiar with the discussions told the Guardian: “These photos are a powerful reminder of the systematic torture and mass killings ongoing in Syria – the very least the European parliament can do is bear witness.

Syria Assad Regime Gruesome Torture Photos on Display at UN

Graphic exhibition of photographs showing the victims of atrocities carried out by Assad regime goes on display at UN headquarters.

The photographs were part of a cache of 55,000 smuggled out of Syria on flash drives last year by “Caesar”, the code name given to a former Syrian military photographer who defected. Caesar had been tasked with taking pictures of the corpses of those who died inside facilities run by the Assad regime. The thousands of images were taken between 2011 and 2013, and according to forensic analysis depict 11,000 deaths. Caesar and his team recently began posting photos from the cache of victims’ faces on Facebook, to help families and prosecutors identify their missing relatives.

More than 20,000 children have been killed in the Syrian civil war, the United Nations says, while many more are subjected to “unspeakable” suffering, including rape, torture and recruitment for combat. Torture was applied equally to adults and children by Assad’s Regime forces!

The report says methods of torture inflicted on children include beatings with metal cables, whips and metal batons; electric shock, including to the genitals; the ripping out of fingernails and toenails; sexual violence, including rape or threats of rape; mock executions; cigarette burns; sleep deprivation; solitary confinement; and exposure to the torture of relatives. What is freedom?
The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
“Revolution was the only path to freedom!”

Syria Forced Disappearance and Rampant Torture

Cases of forced disappearance in Syria started when late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad started to face opposition from citizens in the late 1970s. While he was able to buy elite merchants of Damascus through Badr el-Deen Shallah, the general public was outraged by Assad’s policies in ruling the country and the rise of corruption. From then on, any voice opposing or questioning the Syrian government was silenced by forced disappearance or threats. According to Human Rights Watch, no fewer than 17,000 people disappeared during Assad’s 30-year rule.

Bashar al-Assad took his father’s policy further and considered any voice questioning anything about Syria’s political, economical, social, or otherwise policies should be monitored and when needed, detained and accused of weakening national empathy.

Often forced disappearance implies murder. The victim in such a case is abducted, illegally detained and often tortured during interrogation; killed, and the body hidden. The party committing the murder has deniability, as nobody provides evidence of the victim’s death.
